At Klipfontein everyone was asleep. At 10 o'clock they were woken by one of the farm workers beating on the door. He shouted to them to flee for their lives. Someone opened a window and water began to pour into the house. The door to the shed was opened and the horses set free. On Klipfontein fortunately the water spread across a wide expanse of land between the mountain slopes. The family was able to struggle through the fast-flowing water until they eventually reached the home of Mrs Studte across the river. Here they found at least 80 others, farmers, their families and their workers who had sought shelter there.
